Budibase is a good fit when somebody can own its data model, screens, bindings, automations and deployment. Its visual builder and open-source self-hosted edition make it more flexible than many lightweight no-code products.
The reason to seek an alternative is not that Budibase always requires a developer. The useful question is whether your business team can safely maintain the particular app you are creating. Choose Softr for a portal around existing data, Glide or AppSheet for data-connected mobile work, Appsmith for developer control, or KasiLabs when operators need to define the workflow in ordinary language while review and release remain explicit.
The short answer
Keep Budibase when a technical owner values its visual builder, database connections, automations and hosting choices. Choose Softr for a portal, Glide for a polished data app, AppSheet for Google-connected offline field work, Appsmith for queries and JavaScript, or KasiLabs when the operating team must lead the app without maintaining the builder.
Do not confuse drag-and-drop composition with zero maintenance. Every production app has rules, access decisions, data dependencies and failures that somebody must understand.
Understand the current Budibase offer
Budibase's current cloud plans price several dimensions separately. Premium is $49 per month and includes one creator, ten workspaces, SSO, custom branding, backups and seven days of logs. Business is $299 per month, includes three creators, unlimited workspaces, user groups, 30 days of logs and 250,000 monthly actions. Additional creators cost $50 per creator each month and end users $5 per user each month on annual billing. Monthly billing follows a published 20% uplift. Budibase pricing
Budibase defines actions as work performed by apps, agents and automations. An automation node, a row save or delete and an AI-agent tool call can count. Custom SQL queries and API requests are excluded from that action definition. The published limits are hard: after the allowance is reached, the customer must move to a higher tier or plan for agents and automations to continue.
The free open-source plan is a different operating choice. Budibase lists one self-hosted workspace with unlimited apps, automations, agents, users and actions. Enterprise adds commercial controls and support. Software licence cost is not the total cost of self-hosting; the organisation becomes responsible for infrastructure, upgrades, monitoring, backups, identity configuration and recovery.
Run a maintainer test, not a feature tour
Use one supplier-onboarding workflow:
- a coordinator creates the supplier record;
- the supplier provides documents;
- compliance can view and approve evidence;
- finance can see bank information but the requester cannot;
- rejection returns the record with a reason;
- a failed email is visible and safe to retry;
- a named owner approves changes before release.
Give the intended maintainer four tasks: add an evidence type, create a role, change a threshold and diagnose a failed automation. Record whether they can explain the resulting access and action count.
| Result | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Maintainer completes the tasks and tests denied access | Keep Budibase; document the app |
| Data is sound but the audience needs a simpler portal | Compare Softr or Glide |
| Offline field capture is the deciding requirement | Compare AppSheet with a real sync test |
| Developers want direct queries, JavaScript and Git | Compare Appsmith |
| Operators know the rules but cannot own the builder | Test an operator-led governed build in KasiLabs |
Softr for a portal around business data
Softr is a closer alternative when customers, suppliers, partners or employees need a clear portal over a supported data source. Its plan decision depends on authenticated app users, database records, workflow actions and custom user groups.
Current annual pricing lists Professional at $139 per month for 100 app users and Business at $269 for 500 users. Business lists higher record and action allowances plus unlimited user groups. Softr pricing
Choose Softr when portal experience and nontechnical page composition are more important than self-hosted infrastructure or developer extensibility. Test every role against the exact records and writes it should have.
Glide for a polished data-connected application
Glide is useful when the team wants a responsive application around spreadsheets or other supported data. Its current Business documentation includes workflows, spreadsheet sources, API capabilities and business-user allowances.
Glide has operated more than one public pricing surface, including a newer GlideOS offer. Confirm which product, user definition and update allowance apply to a new app before modelling the switch. Glide pricing
Choose it when interface speed and data-connected work matter. Verify offline behaviour, row ownership, update counting and external-user economics rather than assuming parity with Budibase.
AppSheet for offline and Google-connected work
AppSheet's current prices are $5 per user monthly for Starter, $10 for Core and $20 for Enterprise Plus. It connects to spreadsheets and file sources, supports automation and security controls, and can be configured for offline mobile use. AppSheet pricing
Choose AppSheet for field teams whose app must continue through connectivity gaps. Run the exact offline, sync-conflict and security-filter cases. AppSheet itself warns that security filters are not a complete security solution and documents offline limitations. AppSheet offline and sync
Appsmith when the owner is a developer
Appsmith is an open-source internal-tool builder designed around databases, APIs, widgets, queries and JavaScript. It supports Git collaboration and self-hosted deployment. Business currently costs $15 per user monthly; Enterprise starts at $2,500 monthly for 100 users. Appsmith documentation, Appsmith pricing
Choose Appsmith when the team wants to treat the internal app as a developer-owned software asset. It is not a shortcut for a business team that has no technical maintainer.
KasiLabs when the business team owns the rules
KasiLabs is built around a different ownership boundary. The operations team describes the records, states, roles, evidence, approvals and exceptions in ordinary language. KasiLabs prepares a plan and private working version. Real users test representative and awkward cases. Workspace owners choose roles and paid-action limits, and an authorised reviewer approves the exact release.
Earlier versions remain available. The operator owns what the workflow should do without being asked to maintain bindings, automation nodes, JavaScript or infrastructure.
Current plans are $29 per month for five members and one live app, $99 for 25 members and five live apps, and $299 for 100 members and 20 live apps. Paid services have separate included credit, published rates and workspace limits. KasiLabs pricing
Do not choose KasiLabs if self-hosting, direct database-query control, plugin development or a one-click Budibase migration is required. No automatic transfer of Budibase data, screens, roles, automations, plugins or credentials is claimed.
Inventory before you change platforms
Record every table, view, screen, binding, automation, role, group, email, API connection, environment value, plugin and backup used by the selected workflow. Then follow one supplier from submission through approval and list the decisions that happen outside the app.
Build only that route in the strongest alternative. Test a normal supplier, missing evidence, a wrong-role request, a rejection, a failed message, a retry and a private policy change. If Budibase passes with the intended maintainer, keep it. If the app needs a clearer audience surface, choose the corresponding portal or data-app tool. If the business team needs to own policy without owning implementation mechanics, bring the supplier-onboarding workflow to KasiLabs.
